Patna University which was founded on 1st October 1917 was initially established as an examining body from matriculation to post graduation. It is the seventh oldest University in India. It covered huge geographical area which spanned whole of Bihar, Orissa and even Nepal since its establishment. It was the only University in Bihar till January 1952 and till the establishment of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu it continued as examination body for the institutions of Nepal. It also ceased to be the examining body for educational institutions of Orissa with the establishment of Utkal University in Orissa. It is the only teaching cum residential university in the state with a truly national character that transcends linguistic, cultural, political and other geographical barriers.Today, Patna University has ten constituent colleges and thirty-one post-graduate departments in the faculties of Humanities, Social Science, Science, Education, Commerce, Law, Management. The University also runs the Master of Business Administration Course in the Department of Applied Economics and Commerce, the Department of Personal Management and Industrial Relation is having post-graduate Diploma courses in Industrial Safety Management and Rural Management and Welfare Administration. These are self-financed courses.
